Political Campaign: Local – Provincial – Federal
On occasion, the Board believes it is in the best interests of Pensioners to engage in the lobbying of politicians (Local, Provincial, Federal) when their pensions and/or benefits may be in jeopardy, or in danger of being compromised. The last political campaign sanctioned by the Board was in 2005, when lobbying efforts by our members proved very successful in persuading the government of Premier Dalton McGuinty to rescind the 5.1 election for Stelco Pension Plans. Currently there is no political campaign.
The Canadian Federation Of Pensioners (CFP) is a pensioner advocacy group whose primary objective is to improve the long-term security of retiree Defined Benefit plan pensions by representing the interests of pensioners in the development of public policy. CFP believes firmly in the strength in numbers to advocate on behalf of pension groups and retirees for pension security and reform. SSPO is one of the three founding members of CFP, along with Dupont/Invista, and Bell Pension Group. It has now grown to 25 groups representing over 100,000 retirees. The CFP is a non-profit volunteer organization of retiree pension groups. Check in to view periodic Federation updates.

Pension & Benefits
View the latest funding reports from the Board, and copies of the latest available Actuarial Reports filed with the Ontario Government (Financial Services Commission of Ontario - FSCO).
Please note that sponsors (ie US Steel Canada) of a pension plan have 9 months following the annual report period to file an audited copy of the report with FSCO. For example, an Actuarial Report for the period January 1 through to December 31, 2008.would have a filing deadline of September 30, 2009. The act does not require the contents of such reports to be released to members of the plan until that date.
In early 2009, an electronic version of the updated U. S. Steel Benefit Plan for Salaried Retirees and active Salaried Employees was supplied by U. S. Steel to the Pension Advisory Committee. Copies of the Plan are posted in Benefits Area.
Pension Advisory Committee
The Pension Advisory Committee is a legally constituted body formed near the end of the CCAA process. This committee has legal status within the provisions of the Pension Benefits Act (PBA). The company has an obligation to meet periodically with the committee so that the committee can present the interests of the members, make suggestions, and keep pensioners informed. The PAC is entitled to know the status of the salaried pension plans and to provide input into their administration. The Committee is made up of Retirees, Active Employees, and Company Representatives. Some of the SSPO Board Members also sit on the PAC. Committee feedback to the membership is posted in this area. The PAC meets with the Company approximately twice per year. On occasion, feedback to the members is posted in this area.
